Chili and pepper Imports

In 2017, the amount of chilies and peppers (green) imported worldwide stood at 2.9M tonnes, shrinking by -4.0% against the previous year level. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2007 to 2017; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009, when imports increased by 16% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, chili and pepper imports attained its maximum volume of 3.1M tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2017, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, chili and pepper imports totaled $5.2B in 2017. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2007 to 2017; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Global import peaked of $5.2B in 2016, leveling off in the following year.

Chili and pepper Imports By Country

In 2017, the U.S. (720K tonnes), distantly followed by Germany (396K tonnes), the UK (237K tonnes), France (162K tonnes), and Russia (139K tonnes) represented the largest importers of chilies and peppers (green), together making up 56% of total imports. The following importers – Canada (123K tonnes), the Netherlands (112K tonnes), Italy (76K tonnes), Poland (62K tonnes), Spain (56K tonnes), Malaysia (55K tonnes), and Belgium (55K tonnes) together made up 18% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Belgium (+10.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the U.S. ($1.4B), Germany ($834M), and the UK ($442M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2017, together comprising 52% of global imports. These countries were followed by France, Canada, the Netherlands, Russia, Poland, Italy, Belgium, Spain and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 27%.

Malaysia (+17.2% per year) had the highest rates of growth with regard to the imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 10 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Chili and pepper Import Prices By Country

The average chili and pepper import price stood at $1,782 per tonne in 2017, going up by 4% against the previous year. In general, chili and pepper import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010, when it surged by 12% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, average import price for chili and pepper reached its maximum level of $1,968 per tonne in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2017, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination; the country with the highest import price was Germany ($2,107 per tonne), while Malaysia ($1,005 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by Malaysia (+11.9% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
