Coconut oil Imports

In 2017, the amount of coconut (copra) oil imported worldwide stood at 1.9M tonnes, dropping by -9.2% against the previous year level. In general, coconut oil imports continue to indicate a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when imports increased by 15% year-to-year. In that year, coconut oil imports reached its maximum volume of 2.5M tonnes. From 2011 to 2017, growth of coconut oil imports failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, coconut oil imports amounted to $3.3B in 2017. In general, it indicated a strong expansion from 2007 to 2017: the total imports value decreased at an average annual rate of -1.6% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2017, coconut oil imports increased by +9.4% against its level of 2014. Global import peaked of $3.5B in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2017, it failed to regain its strength.

Coconut oil Imports By Country

In 2017, the U.S. (435K tonnes), the Netherlands (339K tonnes), and China (280K tonnes) represented the key importers of coconut (copra) oil in the world, making up 54% of total import. Malaysia (124K tonnes) ranks second in terms of the global imports with a 6% share, followed by Germany (6%). The following importers – Italy (68K tonnes), Belgium (55K tonnes), South Korea (48K tonnes), France (48K tonnes), Japan (44K tonnes), and Russia (36K tonnes) together made up 15% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by China (+8.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the U.S. ($860M), the Netherlands ($552M), and China ($241M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2017, together accounting for 50% of global imports. Germany, Malaysia, Italy, France, South Korea, Japan, Belgium and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Italy (+9.6% per year) experienced the highest rates of growth with regard to the imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 10 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Coconut oil Import Prices By Country

The average coconut oil import price stood at $1,713 per tonne in 2017, going up by 21% against the previous year. Overall, it indicated a strong expansion from 2007 to 2017: the import price increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2017, coconut oil import price increased by +65.9% against its level of 2013. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when import price increased by 68% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, average import price for coconut oil reached its maximum level in 2017, and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2017, the country with the highest import price was Germany ($2,022 per tonne), while China ($861 per tonne) was among the lowest.
