Non-Profit Grants Miami-Based Couple A Chance at Parenthood

MIAMI, FL – MARCH 18, 2019 – Gift of Parenthood, a non-profit organization based in Philadelphia, PA has awarded $11,000 in grant money to a Miami-based couple who have hitherto been unable to have a child of their own. Elaine and Giovany Lopez, originally from New York, spent five years trying to conceive using everything from supplements to scraping all their money together for an IVF cycle that ultimately proved unsuccessful. With the grant, they are now able to try again.

“Having the opportunity to be a dad, to me, means the world,” says Giovany. His wife, Elaine, adds, “That’s a gift that nobody can buy. That’s a gift that nobody can put a price on.”

Gift of Parenthood awards grants four times a year ranging from $8,000 to $15,000 to applicants who are uninsured for fertility treatments. The program aims to help families conceive through advanced fertility treatments such as IUI, IVF, egg donation, embryo donation, and gestational surrogacy at clinics that are members of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology. IVFMD and EMD Serono have stepped in as corporate donors to help Gift of Parenthood give these families the ultimate gift – new life.

It is estimated that one in six individuals are diagnosed with infertility every year and studies have shown that it takes a emotional and mental-health toll on both individuals and their relationships. Many single mothers and couples feel shame about infertility and keep their struggles to themselves and common coping challenges include anxiety/depression and social isolation. However, fertility is not an easy fix as both IUI repeat procedures and IVF have soaring costs with the national average ranging from $10,000 to $15,000 per cycle. This makes it almost impossible for uninsured patients who want to have a family. Gift of Parenthood believes that they exist to support those who take the leap to expand their family and make dreams come true.

“We founded Gift of Parenthood because we feel money should be no barrier for the most simple yet greatest act of being human… giving birth,” says Gift of Parenthood founder, Theresa Wolf, “It’s definitely not an easy task to read through the different grant applications and have to narrow it down. It’s very emotional. We would love to be in a situation to grant a higher percentage of applicants the gift of life.”

“The need is there. We see it on a day to day basis and we’re really thankful to be able to offer that assistance to our patients. In my opinion, all fertility clinics should work with Gift of Parenthood,” says Dr. Enrique Soto at IVFMD, “There’s a lot of need out there. We see it every single day in our office and to be able to collaborate, to be able to give that gift to a couple who can’t afford it; there’s no words to say how much that really means to us and, more importantly, to our patients.”

Gift of Parenthood also recently granted money to a same-sex couple in Marietta, GA. Natasha and Tasha. As small-business owners, they were unable to find an affordable insurance plan to cover the costs associated with the fertility treatments. Gift of Parenthood awarded them an IUI grant.

The next grant deadline is April 15, 2019. To apply, interested couples should visit the website at www.GiftofParenthood.org and fill out the application. The grant is open to applicants regardless of marital status, gender, or sexual orientation – even age is taken into account on a case by case basis.
