The Portland Based Company Talks Commercial Engineering

Portland, OR – Established in 1997, Lewis and Van Vleet strives to provide world class structural engineering and consulting services to architects, contractors, and developers. Since the beginning, LVVi has provided services in both public and private land development. Projects have included corporate office developments, industrial parks and buildings, hospitals, K-12 and higher education school buildings, commercial and retail center developments, institutional, public works projects amongst many others. Their diverse experience allows them to provide specialty design services ranging from sports stadiums, hospitals, school and fire station designs to the design of aluminum frame tents, bleachers and other temporary structures.

LVVI has a long-standing history of teaming with architects and construction professionals to build state-of-the-art fire stations. Since building the Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue Station in 1998, they have completed nearly four dozen emergency service buildings, fire stations, and fire training towers throughout the Northwest. Due to changes in building codes in recent years, they have also provided engineering support for seismic upgrades to 12 existing fire stations. This type of work has allowed them to team up with notable architects. Most recently they have teamed up with Soderstrom Architecture with whom they are currently working on several stations in Tumalo, Oregon.

Why is Lewis and Van Vleet so passionate about emergency stations? Because fire stations are unique and they enjoy the challenges associated with building them. Because emergency services buildings are designed to be “essential facilities” the structures are meant to remain intact, and operational in the event of extreme environmental events like flooding, earthquakes, etc. In simpler terms, the design loads are increased up to 1.5 times that of a normal building project. The design of emergency stations are considerably different than the average project. Apparatus bays to support emergency vehicles, sleeping quarters, and employee safety all play just a small part in the grand scheme of design. On top of safety and structural elements, emergency stations are also often designed to fit in with the architectural style of the neighborhood the building is in, as well as other elements and history of the surrounding area.

Overall, LVVI is confident in their abilities to deal with the unique challenges these types of buildings present and actively promote this skill as a part of their core design expertise. Aside from being skilled in this area, as a company they believe in building things to last. Fire Stations and other emergency services buildings are central to local communities and Lewis & Van Vleet takes pride in being central to building structures that are critical to their community. They are proud to continue on this legacy and look forward to working as integral parts of the structural design and construction teams for years to come.
