PROJECT LEAD THE WAY OFFERED AT LAKESIDE UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT MIDDLE SCHOOLS - LEADS TO SUCCESS IN STEM CAREERS

Lakeside Union School District strives to keep curriculum and courses offered to students modern and in the 21st Century. By offering the science elective course, Project Lead the Way, Lakeside students are able to have relevant STEM experiences that can lead to success in their future education and career endeavors. During these courses, middle school students tackle real-life science and engineering issues like improving infant car seats, building eco-friendly container homes, and designing wilderness search-and-rescue missions.

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) is an organization committed to providing transformative learning experiences to students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). PLTW focuses on engaging students in hands-on, real-world projects so students understand how the skills they are learning in the classroom can be applied in everyday life to ignite a passion for learning and STEM in students. In Lakeside schools, we want the highest quality STEM opportunities available to all middle school students.

At Tierra del Sol Middle School, PLTW is an elective course that is open enrollment where any student with an interest can participate. The curriculum is provided, and sanctioned, by PLTW and taught to its rigorous standards. Throughout the three-year program, students are exposed to seven of the Gateway to Technology (GTT) courses; Design and Modeling, Flight and Space, Automation and Robotics, Medical Detectives, Computer Science for Innovators and Makers, Green Architecture, and App Creators. These courses lead to the three high school strands offered by PLTW: Computer Science, Engineering, and Biomedical Science.

At Lakeside Middle School, students are admitted into the GTT course based on their GPA, efforts, and individual science grades. This course is specifically designed for middle school students who excel in the math/science areas. This program has five modules that integrate into current math/science programs for the more advanced students.

Teachers are trained rigorously to teach these courses to students with Next Generation Science Standards in practice and also work closely with local high schools to ensure alignment between PLTW and future high school science classes. The coursework in Project Lead the Way gives students pathways to engineering degrees at SDSU and a headstart on a lucrative path to their future.
