Great Lent, Holy Week, and Pascha in the Greek Orthodox Church

Palm Coast, FL – 28 March, 2019 – Easter is one of the most important periods of the Christian faith, especially in the Greek Orthodox Church in America. Leading up to Easter is Holy Week, and the Great Lent exemplifying the crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the Christian Church worldwide.

Greek Orthodox Christians in America are especially grateful to Father George Papadeas, the first American-Born Greek Orthodox priest in America, whom at age 93 was still actively preaching. He published the “Holy Week-Easter” book in 1963, which remains the standard accepted text to this day. The overwhelming gratitude of parishioners and clergy alike, guides the faithful with meticulous and perfectly compiled, original Greek with a side-by side English translation on each page of the entire Holy Week services.

The book was originally designed for the parishioner, but was quickly adopted as the universal standard text used by clergy as well, and is now offered in a larger edition with 50% larger type for Clergy, Chanters, Choir, and those of us with diminishing eyesight.

The small black “Holy Week-Easter” book gained more popularity and ensured a complete liturgical experience for that important week. Greek Orthodox faithful are able to follow the daily services of Holy Week with their personal copies to read and follow the theological themes contained in the hymns and scriptural readings of these services.

Greek culture and identity continue to play an important role in the life of Greek Orthodox in America. The use and knowledge of Greek language has diminished in the past few decades due in part, to interfaith marriages, adaptation, and an increasing number of converts to Greek Orthodoxy which have somewhat changed the infrastructure of these congregations, making this book even more critical, Immigration from Greece has peaked but interfaith marriages has enhanced the need for this book.

Greek-Americans continue to maintain a close association between faith and culture, as evidenced with the popularity of the “Greek Festivals” across our great nation, allowing the public a sneak-peek into Greek traditions and heritage, each and every year, while providing a means of community-building within the local parish.

Father George Papadeas was an internationally well-respected and extremely active, the longest continually-serving Greek Orthodox priest in the United States with 69 years of service, until he passed away in 2011 at age 93, his other works are available at www.patmospress.com/shop
