NOVATO HIGH SENIOR LUCY LONDON REPRESENTS THE SPIRIT OF VOLUNTEERING AND GOING GREEN AT HEART OF MARIN AWARDS

Novato High School and Novato Unified School District are incredibly proud of one senior who has gone beyond the mark of your average teenage volunteer to create a ripple effect down to her lower classman at Novato. Lucy London was recognized as one of five Youth Volunteers of the Year at the 2018 Heart of Marin Awards presented by CVNL Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership and event sponsor, Bank of Marin.

At this year’s event, 650 members of the community packed the Marin Center Exhibit Hall to honor nonprofits, volunteers, leaders, and businesses who give back. Lucy was recognized for her creation of the Novato High School Earth Club which spreads awareness about issues of sustainability and climate change and implements solutions to address them. The club meets twice per week and holds events and fundraisers to raise awareness and funds towards their green goals.

Lucy directs all of the club activities and recruitment and enthusiastically gets underclassmen excited about what they can do to help the environment. Over the last year, Lucy and the Earth Club have been successful with persuading the Novato Unified School Board to adopt a Climate Action Resolution, holding the district to their commitment to use green energy and sustainable resources when possible.

Lucy has also held multiple meetings with school district administration, facilities, and grounds departments in order to find the best way implement sustainability programs. She has campaigned for things like installing bottle fill stations, acquiring tri-sort trash/recycle/compost bins, and getting the facilities crews on-board with a modern recycling and composting program.  From beach clean-ups to lobbying the School Board and City Council, Lucy is committed and fights hard to get knowledge about climate change and sustainability and solutions for those into Novato Unified.

Fellow Senior McKenna O’Neill announced Lucy’s award and Deputy Superintendent Kris Cosca was also in attendance to congratulate her. Novato High School sends its congratulations to Lucy and everyone in the Novato High School Earth Club for their passion and dedication to making the planet a better place to live.
