$2.5 Million Grant Given to Alleviate Florida’s Opioid Crisis, Addiction

The U.S. Department of Labor sends approximately $2.5 million to Florida to fight the opioid crisis, enhance Florida addiction treatment, and alleviate the never-ending substance abuse.

Awarded to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, the grant is part of a campaign to put individuals affected by the substance abuse back to work. All of the money will provide jobs at drug rehab Florida or community centers. The project will be held in Brevard counties, Manatee, and Sarasota.

In December last year, Kylie McGivern I-Team Investigator found the Tampa Bay area is home to a few of the hardest hit areas in Florida. More particularly, its substance abuse OD (overdose) death rates top the state average. The large number is expected to rise in the next few years.

The $2.5 million grant will be employed to fund positions, including peer recovery specialists, addiction counselors, and employment opportunities to those seeking careers in Florida addiction treatment, pain management, and prevention.

In a new release, Alexander Acosta, U.S. Secretary of Labor said that the opioid abuse and other substance addiction devastate many families or communities. Helping these people find great family-sustaining job opportunities is a crucial part of their recovery. With the Dislocated Worker Grant, it will help those affected by opioid restore their optimal mental health and return to office works.

Among the 1,500 local governments and state, Florida also fights the crisis and takes opioid drug makers to court. Alleged internal company documents from Massachusetts prosecutors reveal what Purdue Pharma denied for years that the substance is exceptionally addictive.

Recently, many local governments joined over 600 cities and counties in filing a lawsuit against the people who own Purdue Pharma. The federal lawsuit includes St. Petersburg, Bradenton, Hernando, Pinellas Park, and Pinellas counties. It also names approximately eight members of the Sackler family.

The governments accuse the family of falsely advertising the substance as safe. Because of that, it has led to abuse, addiction, and thousands of overdose deaths.

With the continually growing rate of overdose and addiction, the $2.5 million grant will be of great help. From innovative Florida addiction treatment, well-equipped professionals to quality support, everything will be available, alleviating the prevalent crisis. Affected people will be able to live normal and be free from substance addiction.
