Maurizio Gigola’s directorial debut of GUALTIERO MARCHESI: THE GREAT ITALIAN – the food doc honouring the forefather of modern Italian Cuisine, Gualtiero Marchesi – the forefather of modern Italian Cuisine has arrived on various US digital streaming platforms today, April 16th (Amazon, DirecTV, inDEMAND, Fandango, FlixFling, Vimeo on Demand and Sling/Dish).

Written by Gigola and Donatello Alunni Pierucci (Italia ’90: lavori in corso, Provvisorio quasi d’amore), THE GREAT ITALIAN is a stunning tribute to the great chef, Gualterio Marchesi, who re-defined Italian cuisine. By following the chefs and ingredients that acted as his inspiration, Gigola’s food doc recounts Marchesi’s life work – revisiting wineries, markets and old restaurants – the ones that influenced his gastronomic imagination. Beginning from Marchesi’s humble beginnings in Italy to his travels to France and Japan, Gigola showcases how the chef revolutionized Italian cuisine and brought it to the top of international gastronomy. It was his presentation of food as an art form and the simplicity of it that gained Marchesi such worldwide success.
In 1985, Marchesi became the first Italian professional to obtain three-Michelin stars. Creating several institutions during his life, including Marchesi was the founder and director of the international school of cooking in Alma di Colorno, located in the province of Parma. Additionally, he opened several world-renowned restaurants, like Via Bonvesin de la Riva. THE GREAT ITALIAN continues with interviews from “who’s who” of Italian gastronomy, including Paul Bocuse, Troisgros family, the founders of the Nouvelle Cuisine Three-star Michelin chefs, and three-star Michelin Chef, Massimo Bottura.
