Real Estate Developer Kerry Danenberg Addresses Concerns Of West Hurley Town Residents In Informational Meeting

New York – May 3, 2019 – At an overflowing Town Informational Meeting at the West Hurley Fire House on Wednesday April 17, Developer Kerry Danenberg, along with his wife Sarah Russell, a prospective partner for the West Hurley Elementary School Project, a property manager whose company handles buildings for Danenberg in Brooklyn, and an attorney who worked on the cases, were present to answer questions raised by concerned citizens about violations on buildings in Brooklyn.

They presented the case of a concerned and responsible property owner with a deep history in the city and hundreds of tenants with good experiences, being targeted by a group of activist tenants in a building who were using the system and a free activist legal firm to live rent-free for over a year.

According to the city records presented at the meeting, the main building in question, 431 Bleeker Street, had few violations going into March of 2018, then over a hundred violations placed on the building by non-rent-paying tenants in coordination with their free legal team over the course of the following months while also staging press events outside the building, and the city records show all of these coordinated violations cured and cleared by the Fall of 2018.

Danenberg stated “Over a year into this process of dealing with activist tenants and lawyers to avoid paying rent in their free-market apartments, the tenants in question are still refusing to pay rent as they enjoy their renovated and violation-free apartments. We had to bring actions for non-payment of rent, and every bit of PR these tenants generated and every delay their free legal team creates seems to give them more time to illegally not pay rent. They’ve got brand new apartments, inspected by the city and cleared of violations over 6 months ago, and I’m still in court trying to get them to pay their agreed upon rent.”

Regarding charges of tenant harassment brought by the tenants, court documents were present showing the charges were dismissed, and no record of Danenberg having been found guilty of tenant harassment can be found in the HPD’s records.

Asked after the meeting what additional steps Danenberg would take to ease the concerns of residents, he said he would be happy for all elected representatives of the Town to visit the building themselves and review the public records on behalf of their constituents. “I want to be completely transparent with the Town of West Hurley. It’s unfortunate that this common tactic of rent evasion in New York City has taken up so much room in the conversation regarding concerns of the people of West Hurley regarding what we deeply believe is a positive project for the community and everyone involved.”
