There are several appellate courts in the US, which begs the question: are appeals on the rise in America? The easy answer would be to say yes, considering just how many appeal courts really are out there. In total, there are thirteen Courts of Appeal, colloquially known as Circuit Courts. This is somewhat misleading as people immediately then ask: So, if my case goes to appeal it has to go through every one of those? No, eleven of those courts are for specific regions.
How it basically works is that you can take your case to court. These are district courts that are responsible for your initial trial. After that, you or your opposition may the file for an appeal. This is what the circuit courts are for. The circuit courts are the next level up. For most people, if they are denied their appeal in the circuit court for their district, then they can go all the way to the supreme court.
