Most Irish People Think Better Teeth Good for Career and Relationships: Poll
DUBLIN – May 17, 2019 – Teeth are one of the first things you notice about someone, and so it may come as no surprise that a new survey of people in Ireland reveals that the majority believe that improving the look of their teeth would be highly beneficial to their careers and relationships.
In a Google Survey for leading Irish dental chain The James Clinic carried out among people in Ireland in mid-May, 28% of respondents said they “definitely” held the view that having cosmetic dentistry procedures, such as crowns or veneers, would go a long way towards improving their personal appearance and in the process help their career and relationships. This compared with 26.7% of those who took part in the poll saying they believed it was “probably” true that better teeth would be good for them, while 24.7% disagreed and 20.7% did not have an opinion.
It comes as dentists in Ireland, the UK and many other countries report a marked rise in the numbers of people coming to them for cosmetic dentistry procedures, to give them a perfect smile and improve their appearance. This is increasingly made possible by the widespread availability of cutting-edge technology that allows for faster procedures, such as crowns and veneers, that can be made and fitted in just a day, as well as being more affordable than before.
Analysts say the drive among people to improve their image, whether it’s having work done on their teeth or other cosmetic procedures, is oftentimes due to the popularity of reality TV shows like Love Island that feature contestants with perfect bodies, and teeth, that many viewers want to emulate.
‘Good Teeth Vital’
Most respondents (53.8%) to the survey agreed that good teeth and a great smile were important to them because it made them feel more confident, while 19.2% said it didn’t really concern them one way or the other. A total of 18.6% said it could possibly help their confidence, if they had good teeth, suggesting that currently, they may not be entirely satisfied with them and how they look. A further 8.3% disagreed with the sentiment that good teeth and a great smile were important.
As for how satisfied respondents were with their own teeth and how they look, most were happy with their current set, at 42.% of responses; 34% said they were “a bit insecure about how they look” while 12.7% stated their teeth were what they wish they could fix most about themselves – and 10.7% said they “hate” how their teeth look.
Those who took part in the survey were almost equally divided between whether they thought cosmetic dentistry was “definitely” a good thing to improve someone’s overall look, or “maybe” a positive step to take, with people answering 32.9% and 33.5% respectively. Meanwhile, 17.4% disagreed and said natural teeth were much better, while 16.2% were not sure either way.
Interest in Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures
The majority of respondents to the survey (38.4%), however, expressed a desire to have cosmetic dentistry procedures, such as veneers or crowns, if cost was not a factor; 27% said they would never have such things done, as they like their teeth as they are; 20.1% were not sure but would probably go ahead; and 14.5% said “why not?”
James Hiney, Clinical Director of The James Clinic, believes that the results of the survey were not all that surprising and that they matched the level of interest in cosmetic procedures among patients at the three clinics in Ireland his practice operates.
“We’re seeing more and more people come to us who have nothing wrong with their teeth but want to improve the look of them,” he said. “This is usually down to a desire to boost their overall appearance and confidence, and they think this can help them in many aspects of their lives, especially on a personal level, because they’re much happier with how they look.”
