Florida Dental Assistant Walks the Equivalent of 2.5 Marathons for a Healthy Cause

Los Angeles, CA – May 28th, 2019 – This April, Rohrer Dental Wellness Center held the ‘Wellness Walking Challenge 2019’ in Delray Beach, FL. Dental Assistant Ada Contreras had an outstanding performance after walking 210,726 steps – the equivalent of almost 100 miles – during this 7-day contest.

From April 9th to 16th, Rohrer Dental Wellness Center, a holistic dentist located in South Florida, organized a walking challenge for its staff members and dental team. Based on the recommendations of Dr. Masley in his book Ten Years Younger, Drs. Tom and Joy Rohrer suggested to their team to get more physical activity to get close to the 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week that the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends. That’s how the Walking Challenge was born.

Ada Contreras, the dental assistant who achieved the first position in the contest, took Dr. Masley’s recommendations to the next level: She walked nearly 99 miles in 7 days! “Encouraging physical wellness was the first aim of this Walking Challenge,” said Dr. Tom Rohrer, a dentist in Delray Beach who came up with the idea. “We never expected that Ada would perform so well, helping the rest of us to push our own limits.”

According to an article published by Fortune, the CDC reported that less than 15% of Americans get the physical exercise needed per week to stay healthy and fit. Florida in particular, ranks lower than the US average. Dr. Joy and her team want to help break that trend: “Physical exercise is extremely important to our health. It allows us to control weight and reduce many kinds of illnesses such as diabetes or heart disease. It also boosts our self-esteem and improves our mental health.

But to Rohrer Dental Wellness Center this challenge meant more than just physical exercise. The challenge created a sense of bonding among co-workers at their workplace.  This out-of- office activity  fostered a  sense of engagement and motivation while boosting self-care and a friendly sense of competition that benefited the whole staff.

Several studies on teamwork and team building have shown how out-of-the-office activities break down barriers and build enthusiasm in the workplace.  By fostering healthy and energetic habits they are likely to create a healthy and happy environment among co-workers and teammates. These kind of engaging activities generally help:

• cultivate teamwork

• engage employees in something fun

• develop personal connections with employees (rather than seeing them in their job roles.)

• boost their morale

• promote  wellness, motivation and satisfaction

• develop relationships outside the routine tasks by bringing everyone together.

• understand the value of collaboration

• improve communication and break down hierarchies.

The Wellness Walking Challenge 2019 held by Rohrer Dental Wellness center was a perfect example of the benefits that fostering a sense of wellbeing at one’s workplace can produce. It also made clear that teamwork and engagement are as important as physical wellness to create a friendly and relaxing working environment. And because the challenge also included an awards ceremony (which included a healthy and delicious lunch), a sense of team spirit was also promoted.
