Florin High School in the Elk Grove Unified School District celebrated its second annual PRIDE Day in an effort to promote unity and respect for all.

With many cities, communities and people rallying together nationally in the months of May and June to celebrate LGBT+ Pride, one high school in Sacramento, California held its own PRIDE Day to celebrate the diversity at the school. Florin High School celebrated PRIDE Day on May 22nd with a host of activities and celebrations to encourage students to reach out to each other and encourage inclusivity.

PRIDE Day at Florin High School started as a semester project for a former ASB student, a member of the LGBT+ community. He felt strongly about creating this day because there wasn’t a day that celebrated this group of individuals at the school. His vision for PRIDE Day went beyond the LGBT+ community. He wanted to focus on loving and accepting everyone.

The event is one of the best on the campus and is well-attended by students and supportive staff willing to give up their lunchtime to participate. Florin High School Activities Director, Tiffany Vaughn, reflected fondly on last year’s PRIDE Day saying that it “was one of the best events on our campus.” She added, “I say this because any time you have a large number of teachers coming out during lunch you know you have an event that ‘fits’ with your school community.”

The agenda for Florin’s PRIDE Day included lunchtime activities for students and staff to participate in. A selfie station, tattoo station and PRIDE buttons were just one way students and staff could get involved in the day. Students were encouraged to show their support for LGBT+ peers by wearing PRIDE themed clothing as well. Florin High School’s goal for this event was to create a way to remind the community that although everyone is different, everyone deserves to be treated with love, kindness and respect.
