The Jamaica Celebrity Sports Camps is an annual event organized by RuJohn Foundation which was set up in 2003 by Christina and Andrew Bachelor. The event is hosted in line with the organization’s goal of providing the necessary tools for education to the rural and inner-city schools of the United States and Jamaica.

The annual event includes sports camps led professional athletes and acting workshops anchored by successful actors and entertainers in Kingston and Montego Bay Jamaica. The 2019 edition of the event is scheduled to hold from June 16 to 22, with notable names on the list of attendees.

The 2019 Annual Jamaica Celebrity Sports Camps will be featuring A-list sports and entertainment celebrities. Some of the names expected to attend the event include Andrew “King Bach” Bachelor (Meet the Blacks), Emmy Nominated Actor DeStorm Power (Caught), and Darius Butler (Indiana Colts). Other celebrity attendees are Jelanie Jenkins (Miami Dolphins), Lance Gross (Star), Tristin Mays (McGuyver), Shibhon and Amanda (former Brooklyn Nets Dancer), and a host of other big shots organized by Christina Bachelor.

We sat down with the Rujohn Foundation to find out more about their Celebrity Sports Camps and education:

Q1. For people who have never heard of the Rujohn Foundation, can you please explain what they do?

The RuJohn Foundation focuses on bettering the future of youths in Jamaica and the United States by providing them with the necessary tools to succeed in education, fine arts, and sports. The Foundation hosts annual workshops, provides scholarships, builds athletics complexes, provides school feeding programs, and donates school supplies to various organizations and students.

Q2. Why was the Rujohn Foundation set up?

The RuJohn Foundation was set up as a way for Christina Bachelor and Andrew “King Bach” Bachelor to honor their grandparents’ legacy and help underprivileged youths succeed. They started the foundation in 2003 as teenagers and have continued the work since then.

Q3. Education is a big part of what your organization tackle, how important is education to the youth of today?

Education is an extremely important tool. The proper education can transform your socio-economic status dramatically. For our organization, we do not only focus on traditional education, but also educating yourself in your craft including fine arts and sports.

Q4. A lot of children take education for granted while poorer countries children don’t have that option, what would you say to those children who take education for granted?

Everyone has heard the quote “Knowledge is power”. Education provides you with that knowledge. The world is constantly changing and to adapt you must educate yourself.

Q5. The Rujohn Foundation is to host its Annual Jamaica Celebrity Sports camp in June, what is the aim of the sports camps?

The aim of the Celebrity Sports Camps is to expose Jamaican individuals to professionals in their respective fields. The professional volunteers not only provide the participants with tips, but also motivation and encouragement.

Q6. For those people who attend the Celebrity Sports Camps, what can they expect?

They should expect to have fun, learn and enhance their skills, and can engage with some established and successful professionals.

Q7. How important is the Celebrity Sport Camps?

The celebrity sports camps are a key to highlight the balance between sports and education in daily lives. Each year our camps have grown and the children who participate look forward to this annual event. It gives the children a chance to enhance their skills and learn from professionals in that field. It also provides motivation that sports can be a successful career path.

Q8. How important do you feel sport is in helping a person gain confidence and motivation?

Sports teach people valuable skills such as teamwork, dedication, and the importance of practice. Also, student athletes learn time management skills early. People learn to assist and motivate their teammates and gain confidence through healthy competition with others and themselves.

Q9. For celebrities wishing to get involved with the Rujohn Foundation, what do they need to do? Most of the celebrities involved are referred by past or current participants. We always welcome new celebrities to donate or contact us via our website RuJohnFoundation.com

Q10. There was a report recently that stated a lot of governments around the world are not doing enough to improve educational standards, what would you say to that? We as an organization focus on what we can do to support and uplift individuals. We add value wherever possible and have not worked on improving educational standards with the government.

Q11. In the UK teachers and parents alike feel there is not enough money being pumped into the education system, do you think governments should increase the money into the education system to help children gain the best education possible?

Yes, governments should focus on improving the educating system. A lot of teachers are underpaid and schools are not properly funded. A proper education leads to a productive and prosperous nation.

Q12. Would you like to see more countries around the world provide similar work to yours to help children fulfill their true potential?

Yes, we would love to see more countries provide similar work. We would also love to see the Jamaican diaspora provide more support to the island of Jamaica.
