Childhood Asbestos Exposure: The Significant Impact It Has Towards the Risk of Mesothelioma
The relation between malignant mesothelioma and asbestos exposure over the years has continued to be more commonly recognized. Numerous victims of mesothelioma share similar recollections of playing in piles contaminated with asbestos throughout their childhood. In fact, many of these piles were not far from home. It was not uncommon for factories to be located very close to elementary schools which put young children at risk in some areas. Recent research conducted by a Dutch study has also revealed that there is a larger impact on the risk of disease diagnosis that directly stems from childhood exposures to such harmful asbestos fibers.
Asbestos exposure to thousands of children
The Occupational & Environment Medicine journal had conducted a study which examined more than 12,111 people born between 1940 and 1970 in Aalborg, Denmark. Each of these individuals had also attended one of the four schools that were located near the plant; specifically, ranging from 100 to 750 meters downwind in distance. They then compared the health records of those examined for over 60 years to those of 109,000 of similar ages and genders whom had not experienced such exposure to asbestos. Among the 12,000 individuals, a rare/fatal asbestos-related cancer had been diagnosed to 32 men and 6 women. Based off such findings, they had concluded that those children who attended a school nearby an asbestos facility were up to ten times more likely to become diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma following six decades – a very significant increase for such a rare disease.
Both school and age exposures can raise risks to asbestos-related diseases
According to scientists, those who faced asbestos exposure as children had a seven-fold greater likelihood of developing malignant mesothelioma than those of the general public who had not come into contact with the harmful carcinogenic material. The lead author of the study, Sofie Bünemann Dalsgaard, wrote: “Our results suggest that boys and girls who attended schools and lived in the neighborhood of an asbestos cement plant later in life have a significantly increased risk of MM (Malignant Mesothelioma)”. Those who had attended the school 250 meters North of the plant were the highest group at risk. Nonetheless, symptoms of mesothelioma may take decades to develop following exposure to asbestos.
