Forming a connection is one of the most essential aspects of good leadership. Visual storytelling is an excellent way to not only convey information in a way that is easier to understand but to allow your audience to relate to the content and make a personal connection with it. So what exactly is visual storytelling? It’s a way to tell a story or present information visually, rather than using text. It might be done through photos, clipart or graphics. Consider, for example, a fire safety infographic that you would find in a school, hotel, or office building. It probably uses very few words, but you’re still able to get the main message it is trying to convey. The graphics allow for just about anyone, regardless of culture or language, to quickly process the main point. This is one of the most appealing aspects of visual storytelling, it can be used to relate to anyone.

If you are a leader in a corporate environment, your goal is to form a connection with your employees. Chances are, the people you will work with will possess many different learning styles, capabilities, and personalities. The way one person on your team processes information will not necessarily be the way the next person learns best. The more you communicate with the members of your team and get to know them as individuals, the greater understanding you will have of their strengths and weaknesses, as well as how they best learn.

Visual storytelling allows you a place to start. Not only can it be used to catch and hold your audience’s attention, but it has been proven to cut back on the time it takes to learn and understand something. In addition, adding visuals to a presentation can increase retention of information. These are all very important qualities, particularly if you’re trying to take your form of leadership to the next level. This is because all these things contribute to the overall goal of allowing your audience to make a connection.

Jean Chalopin an entrepreneur, “If you can’t relate to a concept, at least on the most basic level, then chances are you’re not going to be that passionate about it.” If you’re trying to get your team excited and engaged with an upcoming project you’ll be working on, you need to show them why it’s important and how it affects them. Visual storytelling allows your team to connect with the material on a deeper level by telling a story that is succinct and easy to follow.

There are some main qualities you always want to include when taking advantage of visual storytelling. First of all, make sure it always has a clear beginning, middle, and end. In addition, use visuals that contribute to your overall message but don’t distract from it. Your visuals don’t have to be anything fancy but should make the main point easier to quickly grasp. Finally, keep things organized and easy to follow by using just enough graphics, but not going overboard.
