Black Families Can Do Better With Taxes, Says Senior Tax Professional
Forestville, MD – Sep 27, 2019 – Marlon Jackson, senior tax professional and founder of My Taxx Office, was recently interviewed by Lawrence Watkins of The Black Financial Channel. During this interview, he boldly stated, “The black community is being bamboozled by the tax preparation industry.”
The interview focused on the disparity of service received by black customers versus white customers and how the tax preparation industry is doing a disservice to the black community.
It is estimated that 80 percent of people who use tax preparation services are minorities, and many of these are in lower-income brackets. They are typically seeking a fast refund to cover holiday spending or other expenses. However, the money they spend on tax preparation often doesn’t get them the largest possible refund, and they are not given the guidance that would help them improve their financial habits, thus leading to a lower tax burden and bigger tax returns.
When Marlon Jackson got his start in the tax industry 20 years ago, he felt it was his duty to educate his clients, who were mostly black. Upon being told by his manager to “get ’em in, get ’em out,” he felt that black people were being dismissed — they were being relegated to what white tax firms think black people know and want. This led him to start his own tax preparation firm that is focused on empowering minorities and keeping money in the community.
Marlon says, “There is more to taxes than getting a refund. It’s also important to know what they need to do to prepare for the next year.”
