These numbers might explain how great Beijing’s new mega airport is

China’s Beijing Daxing International Airport just started commercial operation on Sept. 25, 2019. The starfish-shaped mega airport is currently the world’s largest terminal in a single building.

It only took four years for Chinese constructors to build such a giant aviation hub, and multiple records have been created during the construction.

The airport is linked to a highly-developed transportation network consisting of rail transit, expressway and inter-city railway. It only takes 19 minutes to arrive at the airport from downtown Beijing, thanks to a newly constructed subway that is able to run as fast as 160 kilometers per hour.

The phoenix-inspired megaproject will offer passengers more convenient and smarter services for passengers, giving them unprecedented traveling experiences. The maximum distance between the transportation hub and the airport terminal center is 600 meters, or an 8-minute walk, while the time to be consumed to claim baggage after landing is also reduced to 13 minutes at minimum.

The airport, located 46 kilometers away from downtown Beijing, will operate at full capacity in 2025, with four runways and a potential passenger volume of 72 million each year.

China Eastern Airlines, as one of the earliest aviation service providers at the airport, as well as the only SkyTeam member that takes the new airport as a main base, said by the next March, 334 of its flights will take off from and land at the Beijing Daxing International Airport on a daily basis, connecting 115 domestic and foreign destinations via 150 air routes.

46 Kilometers

Beijing Daxing International Airport is located at the juncture of Beijing’s Yufa Township and Lixian Township, as well as Guangyang district of Langfang, Hebei Province. It is 46 kilometers south of Tian’anmen Square.

67 kilometers from Beijing Capital International Airport

197 kilometers from Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport

26 kilometers from Downtown Langfang

85 kilometers from Tianjin Binhai International Airport

55 kilometers from Xiong’an New Area

72 Million Passengers

Beijing Daxing International Airport will be able to handle 72 million passengers and 2 million tons of cargos per year by 2025.

So far, 66 airlines have applied to operate at the airport, including 20 from Chinese mainland such as China Eastern Airlines and China United Airlines. 116 air routes, including 15 overseas airways, are expected to be opened by the airport at the end of this year, connecting 112 destinations.

700,000 Square Meters

Beijing Daxing International Airport covers an area of 700,000 square meters, which is equivalent to 98 standard football pitches.

600 Meters

The maximum distance between the transportation hub and the airport terminal center is 600 meters, or an 8-minute walk.

Such a design endows the Beijing Daxing International Airport with better efficiency than its peers with the same size. Passengers will never have to walk far before they get out of the terminal building at this airport.

13 minutes

Thanks to the innovative baggage handling system adopted by the new mega airport, the first arriving baggage will reach the carousel in just 13 minutes.
