Women-focused Recovery Community Organization, DIVAS Who Win Freedom Center, collaborates with the Athens – Clarke County Recovery Community to hold an advocacy walk for overdose prevention awareness

DIVAS Who Win has again reiterated their goal of introducing as many people as possible to multiple pathways of Recovery through education, advocacy and training with their upcoming “Not One More Kickoff Ceremony.” The advocacy walk is an overdose prevention awareness rally to show that recovery is possible while raising awareness about substance use disorder. The event is held in partnership with the Athens – Clarke County Recovery Community in response to the increasing number of substance use disorder cases in Athens. The event will be held Friday, October 25th at the DIVAS Who Win Freedom Center, Athens with over 200 attendees.

Drug use in America has witnessed a steady increase in the last decade, with statistics revealing that over 13% of Americans aged 12 or older use an illicit drug or abuse a psychotherapeutic medication each month. Other nationwide trends include an increase in substance use disorder by people 50 years or older, with the figures doubling in the last ten years. The abuse of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs has also been identified to be costly to the nation, exacting over $740 billion annually in costs related to crime, lost work productivity, and health care. Unfortunately, women are majorly affected by this unfortunate phenomenon. This is where DIVAS Who Win Freedom Center has been looking to make a huge difference over the years by organizing several platforms to fight substance use disorder.

DIVAS Who Win Freedom Center has been able to show that recovery is a possibility with studies revealing that 25 million people are IN Recovery. This claim is also substantiated with the fact that Chanda Santana, one of the conveners of the walk, recently celebrated 13 years of Recovery. In a similar vein, 102 peers visited DIVAS Who Win Freedom Center’s tent at a local Recovery fest last month, collectively representing 276 years of Recovery with each person writing down their sober date.

The Not One More Kickoff Ceremony is one of such programs, creating a platform to raise awareness about the increasing case of substance use disorder in the community. The six recent overdose occurrences in Athens-Clarke County, with two resulting in fatalities has further made it imperative for the community to stand up against drug abuse and addiction.

The event has been described as a transformational moment in the country, having people from all walks of life in attendance, including local elected officials, community leaders, and Recovery leaders. This will create an opportunity for the different stakeholders in the community to interact and support those in active addiction by demonstrating unconditional support, compassion, and love with a collective determination to support their recovery.

The event will be held at DIVAS Who Win Freedom Center at 645 Hawthorne Avenue, Athens GA, 30606, kick off beginning at 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm.
