Five Wisconsin Tribes Collaborate on Business Initiative

Five Wisconsin tribes have recently come together to form a business collective and buying group that benefits other Native Americans. Officially dubbed the Tribal Business League, founding members include Red Cliff, Lac du Flambeau, Bad River, Lac Courte Oreilles, and St. Croix tribes.

The group officially went live with their initiative on October 9, 2019, with a launch party held in Danbury, Wisconsin at the St. Croix Casino. Those present included tribal business leaders from all across the state, as well as other Tribal Business League members and twelve vendors specializing in convenience store service delivery.

The Tribal Business League

The Tribal Business League is a 501(c) 6 Non-Profit Organization providing Buying Club benefits to the member tribes. But the League doesn’t stop there; their mission is about tribes helping other tribes prosper and thrive in today’s complex and competitive economic environment. The League has already made available and implemented several resources to help accomplish this objective. More information about the League and their work can be found on their official website, Buy Native.

Collaborating in Tribal Enterprise

The idea behind the Native American-based Buying Group is to help tribes achieve economic success. By negotiating the best prices for tribes, and sharing policies, procedures, best practices, and more, the five founding tribes hope to help other First Nation members thrive in today’s market.

The benefits of a Buying Group go well beyond negotiating contracts with suppliers and networking. Members also gain access to the 150+ year’s experience of current tribal enterprise leaders who have been involved in Retail Management, 25+ years of experience in Facilities Management and Operations, 12+ years in Tribal Government, Sales and Marketing experience, and more.

But the benefits don’t stop there. The Tribal Business League is adamant in helping other tribes succeed through ongoing initiatives with plans to expand upon their mission.

Benefits of joining the Buy Native Initiative

Although the Tribal Business League is the first Buying Group specifically for Native Americans, they also offer a myriad of other benefits.

Tribes who join the collective gain access to an annual $50,000 scholarship fund to help support individual members achieve career goals. These goals aren’t limited to academic ventures; practically any venture can qualify, such as trade schools and certification programs. A five-person consulting team is also available to work with each tribe to negotiate business deals and develop networking relationships to benefit the tribe as a whole.

Joining the Tribal Business League will pave the way for smoother economic development while granting access to the experience of other tribal business leaders. The Tribal Business League hosts monthly meetings, and every tribe gets a chance to host. These monthly meetings present the opportunity to discuss best practices, policies, procedures, training materials, and more.
