Why opportunities exist as number of applications of ceramic fiber products grows?

Aerospace and alternative energy are the emerging applications of ceramic fiber products due to their high-temperature resistance. The alternative energy applications include fuel cells, solar, geothermal, biofuels, and waste incinerators.

Aerospace

  • Fan cowl door insulator, struts, thrust reverser, and engines
  • Insulation of fuel lines
  • Rocket exhaust cones
  • Insulation tiles, gap fillers, gaskets, and seals

Fuel Cells

  • High purity stack insulation
  • Reformer components
  • High purity kiln setters
  • Tube insulation

Solar

  • Solar power tower receivers
  • Silicone water furnace insulation
  • Infrared reflective coatings

Geothermal

  • Tube Insulation

Biofuels

  • Reformers

Waste Incinerator

  • Incinerator lining

How stringent regulations pertaining to the use of carcinogenic materials is a key challenge?

The conventional practice of making ceramic fiber is to extrude ceramics melted at very high temperatures through a set of fine holes, approximately, 3 mm in diameter. Ceramic fiber of less than 1 µm diameter is considered carcinogenic, and one finer than 3 µm diameter can get ingested into the lungs during the manufacturing process, which can cause serious respiratory diseases and severe skin irritation. A fair proportion of the fibers manufactured by the conventional process have small diameters; as a result, there can be serious health hazards to those involved in their manufacturing and handling.

Many countries in North America and Europe are shifting to the use of environment-friendly and bio-soluble products in various applications owing to the increase in environmental concerns and regulatory policies. The global manufacturers of ceramic fiber are focusing on ensuring safety and avoiding health issues associated with the carcinogenic nature of RCF. This is affecting the production capacities of manufacturers in Europe and North America, as the market in these regions is regulated by stringent environmental laws regarding the production of chemical and petroleum-based products. Agencies, including European Ceramic Fiber Industry Association (ECFIA); HTIW Coalition; REACH; and other regulatory bodies are governing the manufacturing of RCF-based products in these regions. These regulations are restraining the growth of the ceramic fiber market in countries where manufacturers do not have the technological advancements to shift to bio-soluble or environment-friendly products.
